Jagannath word is derived from Sanskrit words 'Jagath' and 'Nath'. Jagath means Universe and Nath means 'Lord'. So Jagannath means ' Lord of Universe'. Commonly it is referred to Lord Krishna of Puri, Which is located in Orissa. Puri Jagannath is one of the famous Vaishnava temples. And it is also of one of the 'Chardham'  (Four must visit piligrimage centers of Hindus). Jagannath temple is famous for its  'Ratha Yatra' which will be held once a year.  Ananga Bheema deva of 12th century built Puri Jagannath temple, But the original temple was built by Eastern Ganga dynasty ruler  Ananta Varman Chodaganga. 1.There are totally 120 small temples inside the main compound of Puri Jagannath

2. Sikh King Ranjith Singh of 19th century donated 100 kilos of gold to Puri Jagannath temple. 

He donated more then what he did for Amritsar Golden temple.

3. During his reign, Ranjith Singh has a written an affidavit that his Kohinoor diamond should be 

transferred to Puri Jagannath temple after his death.(Kohinoor diamond is one of the costliest 

diamonds in the world) . But unfortunately, After Ranjith Singh's death, Britishers occupied  his 

kingdom and took over all his assets including Kohinoor diamond.

4. Puri Jagannath temple has india's largest kitchen hall. 

5. Naivedya (Prasada) will be cooked only with water of two wells Ganga and Yamuna, which are 

located near the temple. Naivedya will be cooked only in clay pots and distributed only with clay 

pots.

6. Thousands of potters are employed to make those clay pots 

7. The Idols of deities were made with wood of sacred trees.

8. The Main Ratha (vehicle) which is used for yatra has 16 wheels and it is called 'Nandi Gosha'.
